Find out the best gels for mixed curly hair, along with how to use them.
One of the most common questions I’m asked is how do I achieve the ‘wet look’ when I do my daughters biracial hair?
The short answer is gel!
But how do you know which gel will work best?
I was really wary of using gel on my daughters hair because I remember using it when I was younger and the results were almost always hideous…
I would either get rock hard clumps of hair, or my hair would end up being sticky after it dried.
However I knew that with the right gel, you could get fabulously defined curls with little to no frizz.
And the time eventually came for me to experiment with gel on my daughter’s hair in order to get the look I wanted to achieve.
The first few brands I tried didn’t work, (I got the sticky, tacky results). But I finally found a brand and ended up with (in my opinion) the holy grail of gels! (Check out kinky curly and Mielle below)
If you’re looking for gorgeous, defined, frizz-free curls, you need to add gel to your hair care routine, and these are your best options!

Tips For How To Use Gel On Curly Hair
While gels can bring out the best in your mixed curly hair, there are some things to remember when using them.
Only apply gel to wet hair, (ideally after you’ve cleansed and detangled the hair). Once you’ve applied it, scrunch the hair from the bottom to the top to encourage curl formation and get rid of excess water.
Use gel sparingly. If you use too much, you’ll end up with hard clumps of hair or weighed down curls.
Start with a little bit because you can always add more, but if you use too much then you have to wash it out and start over again. (For reference, I use about a quarter size for my daughter’s hair)
You probably don’t need to use it all the time. Gels can be drying so I’d suggest using it when you want your curls to pop, (like if you’re leaving it down) or in hairstyles when you want added hold.
Gels should be the last product you apply, because if you touch it while it’s drying or after it’s dried, you’ll end up with frizzy hair.
These are the hair products you can apply before gel for added moisture and definition.
