If you’re reading this you must have some interest in how to start a mom blog! I know a lot of moms struggle with wanting to stay home and raise their kids but also know financially they need to work. Or maybe you want to stay home and raise your kids but you still have a passion to have a career. Maybe you want to bring in some extra cash to boost your income, but you don’t want it to be at the expense of your kids.
I totally get it! When I became a single mom, I immediately began looking up regular jobs because I needed to make more money. But I just felt my soul being crushed every time I looked at another job that didn’t pay that well and would mean I would have to work outside my home. I knew I didn’t want to work outside my home. I didn’t want to put my babies in daycare and uproot their lives even more than they already were.
So I looked up jobs I could work from home, but most of them didn’t pay well enough either, or weren’t suitable for someone with very young kids, (like positions where the hours weren’t flexible or you had to be on the phone a lot).
I came across blogging and after several months of research, I decided this was what I wanted to do! I wanted to ultimately show other single moms that it is possible to stay home with your kids, and earn an income. Or that you can use blogging as a side hustle for a boost of income. And after working really hard I’m making an income from my blog!
There are other moms who are making an income from their blogs too!
- Elna Cain from Twins Mommy
- Rosemarie Groner from The Busy Budgeter
- Kim Anderson from Thrifty Little Mom
- Carly Campbell from Mommy On Purpose
- And those are just a few!
You can also make an income from your blog! However, I don’t want to mislead you into thinking if you start a blog today, you’ll be earning money in a few days. Building a business does take time and hard work. But it’s a viable, amazing opportunity that you can take full advantage of!
If you want to start a mom blog, (because what mom wouldn’t want extra money in her pocket) I’ve got the steps, (and a sweet deal for you!).
Now that you’ve made the awesome decision to start a blog, (and potentially change your life!) here’s what you’ll want to do.
How To Start A Mom Blog (From Scratch!)
Choose Your Niche
First you want to decide what you want to blog about, or the niche you want to write about. This could be virtually anything.
- Parenting
- Beauty
- Fashion
- DIY/Crafting
- Technology
- And much more!
Choose A Domain Name
This is what you want your website to be called. You’ll want to come up with several options in case the one you want is already taken. I recommend if possible going with a .com name because it is the most popular and easiest to remember. You’ll also want to consider if your domain name makes sense with what your site is about.
On Siteground you can actually check if the domain name you want is available!
Choose the platform you want to have your blog on
A platform would be where your blog “lives”, like WordPress.org, WordPress.com, Squarespace, or others. I would recommend you do your research carefully for this. I have my site on WordPress.org because among other reasons, I own my site and I can monetize it anyway I want. You do have to pay for WordPress.org, but that is what you are paying for when you choose hosting, (ex: Siteground).
WordPress.com is free but there are limitations on how you can monetize your site and other limitations overall. So yea…do your research because if monetization is important to you, you’ll likely want to go with WordPress.org! (I have no experience with squarespace so I can’t say if it’s good or bad).
Choose hosting
So I didn’t initially start with Siteground, I went with a cheaper option but that option came with the price of poor customer service. So I switched to Siteground for the following reasons:
- They have amazing customer service! I have never waited to speak to anyone when I call and when I use the chat option I have waited maybe 1 minute before someone chats with me. They also resolve issues very quickly.
- They have fast load times with their websites, (unlike the original host I signed up with) and I’ve never had my site go down and I’ve had my site with them for over a year.
- They have hack protection to keep your site safe.
If you choose to go with Siteground, they gave me an awesome deal to share with my readers! You’ll get 60% off any plan you choose but only if you use this specific link!!
They have 3 plans to choose from.
The StartUp plan is perfect for you if you are a brand new blog!
The GrowBig plan is awesome if you have multiple websites and higher pageviews.
The GoGeek plan is perfect for those with sites that get a large amount of pageviews, (like 100,000) or have more development needs.
Plus if you already have a domain, you can utilize their FREE website transfer! (This is included in the GrowBig and GoGeek plans).
Once you’ve chosen your domain name you will move on to the payment option and that’s it! You have hosting for your new mom blog!
Setting Up WordPress
The next step would be to set up WordPress after you’ve signed up with Siteground. You can choose to use the Siteground Wizard to install WordPress. You’ll follow the prompts and choose an email, username, and password.
You will then be prompted to add any enhancements you may want, but none of them are mandatory if you don’t want them. (I will recommend domain privacy because as soon as I got my hosting set up when I first started my blog, I began getting a million blogging related telemarketer phone calls. As soon as I got domain privacy that stopped!)
You will then be prompted to complete the setup
And you’re done!!
Now if you get stuck at any point in the process of setting up WordPress, or you want more detailed help you can call them and they can walk you through what to do, (again their customer service seriously rocks!!) I’ve called them for much less and they had no problem helping me very quickly.
Now that you’ve got your blog set up, you can start writing some amazing posts!
Get it girl!
