Inside: If you’re looking for new ways to have fun and connect with your kids, check out this list of the best board games for kids. These are games you’ll actually enjoy playing!
There’s only so many times I can do pretend play with my kids. I KNOW it’s great for them, (which is why I do it) but it’s so hard for me to either have to play the exact same game over and over again, (like let’s put out the fires with the fire trucks or let’s act out two specific scenes in Frozen over and over again!!) or have the game dictated to me, (which means I can’t veer off course…ever).
So lemme tell you how excited I was when my kids got old enough to play board games!
I bought several once my oldest started showing interest in them. It’s fun to play board games that I loved as a kid, plus she enjoys them too.
Now a lot of the times when she wants to play, she’ll ask to play a board game, which I readily agree to!
If you have kids who are younger, (2 or 3) there’s also games you can get that’ll be fun for them too.
Some of them wouldn’t be considered board games necessarily since you aren’t moving pieces around a board, but your little ones will enjoy playing them with you and their siblings.
You may know that pretend play has a lot of value and your kids should be engaging in this type of play, but board games will also teach your kids valuable life skills.

They have to learn impulse control (waiting their turn), how to be a good sport whether they win or lose, counting, fine motor skills, listening skills (following directions), and more!
They also have cooperative board games for kids now, (at least I don’t remember having these when I was little) so if your kid is on the younger side or is going through the “I have to win everything always” stage, check out the cooperative games. You work together to win the game and there is no single winner or loser!
