Inside: Children’s books about climate change and global warming to educate and inspire your kids to take action
I felt my chest tighten and my heart start beating really fast.
Wait what?? This can’t be right…
In my lifetime I could see the catastrophic results of climate change?!
What’ll happen to my kids? What’ll the planet be like for them when they’re adults?! Will life even be sustainable at that point?!
These racing thoughts were the result of an article I was reading about climate change in the middle of the night one night when I couldn’t sleep.
It profoundly changed me.
Yes, I knew climate change was real and was happening.
But because I’m always working or taking care of my young kids, I don’t always stay up on current events.
Admittedly I didn’t realize how soon we would see the effects. I thought it was a, “far off, somewhere in the distant future” kind of thing.
But I couldn’t have been more wrong.
We have until 2030 to reduce carbon emissions, which is just one of the drastic changes we need to make to slow climate change. (source)
11 years.
We’re already seeing the effects of climate change, (droughts, hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, insects and animals going extinct, just to name a few) and we will continue to see these catastrophic changes if we don’t act now.
I can’t imagine leaving this Earth and my kids being stuck on a planet that’s dying.
We can no longer close our eyes and pretend it’s not happening.
We can’t continue to believe climate change is something that’s centuries away from effecting us, so we don’t need to worry about it.
One of our duties as parents is teaching our kids how to take care of their planet.
Get your kids involved early so we have a generation of action takers who care about the planet and all the life that inhabits it.
You don’t have to go all gloom and doom when talking to your kids about climate change, because frankly that’s a scary topic for a young child. You want to educate them, not freak them out!
Instead, a great way to introduce the topic is by reading books about climate change and global warming for kids.
These books break down a complex subject into easy to understand ideas for your kids.
It gets them thinking about how they can help and encourages them to take action because every person can make a difference no matter how small they are.

Final Thoughts
Our planet as we know it has changed forever.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t still do something to slow climate change. In fact, we’re the only ones that can do something about it.
But in order to make change happen, we have to take action.
Part of that action is teaching our kids what climate change is and how it affects everyone and everything, along with showing them what they can do to help.
Reading these books about climate change to your kids is a great start to educating them and beginning the discussion on the responsibility we all have to take care of the planet.
