For some kids they get the hang of it pretty quickly, but for others they’re really resistant.

One of my kids when they were very young would refuse to apologize unless the other person apologized, even if that person did nothing to apologize for.

I think in my kids mind, saying sorry was the same as saying they were wrong or that they did something on purpose. Maybe they felt embarrassed or ashamed that they were being called out for their behavior?

I’m not sure. All I know is trying to get them to learn that saying sorry is showing care for another person or that it’s trying to right a wrong was really tough.

Eventually we got there though and for those of you with kids who are especially resistant to saying sorry, keep reading for tips on how to get kids to say sorry and mean it!

Understanding the Importance of Saying Sorry

You may be wondering why should you teach your kids to say sorry?

Well, teaching your kids the importance of saying sorry plays a critical role in their emotional development and learning empathy. 

This section will help you understand the significance of apologies in your child’s life and how you can shape their approach to apologizing.

Emotional Development and Empathy

When children learn to say sorry, they develop the ability to understand that their actions have consequences. Through apologizing, they begin to recognize mistakes they make, putting themselves in someone else’s shoes, and showing empathy. 

This emotional growth strengthens their social and relationship skills, which helps them connect better with others.

It’s essential to encourage your kids to think about the hurt they may have caused when they’re apologizing, even when they do something by accident. 

Apologizing just for the sake of apologizing doesn’t work. That’s just teaching your kid to say a word to avoid negative consequences.

Part of this process is helping your child develop genuine remorse for their actions. 

For instance, instead of just saying “sorry for taking your toy,” teach them to say, “I’m sorry I took your toy; I know it made you feel sad.”

The Role of Parents

As a parent, you’re the ones they see and spend the most time with in the first few years of their life, so they’re learning the most from you.

That means you have a huge influence on their ability to understand the importance of apologizing.

The best thing you can do is to be a role model. When you make a mistake, or if you yell, or if you hurt their feelings, apologize sincerely.

Studies have shown that children who see their parents apologizing are more likely to understand and value the act of saying sorry.

You want to make sure you’re not forcing your child to apologize, which can sometimes be harder than it sounds, (like if one of your kids has hurt their sibling and refuses to apologize while the other one is crying, that can be really challenging!).

But forcing your kid to say sorry when they don’t want to isn’t teaching them anything, and is just an insincere expression to avoid getting in trouble.

Instead, use that bad behavior as a teachable moment and guide your children through the process of apologizing. 

To do this effectively, follow these steps:

1. Acknowledge the mistake: Help them see where they went wrong.
2. Recognize the feelings involved: Encourage them to be aware of the emotions they or others experienced.
3. Offer a solution: Work together to prevent that issue from happening again.

Remember, your approach to teaching apologies significantly influences how meaningful and genuine your child’s “sorry” will be. 

Use patience and understanding to foster an environment that promotes empathy and emotional growth.

Teaching Kids to Apologize

Age-Appropriate Techniques for Teaching Apologies

When teaching your child to apologize, consider their age to ensure the approach is developmentally appropriate. 

For younger children, focus on using simple language that they can understand. For example, you can say “When you took his toy, he felt sad.” Or you could ask them how they would feel if someone took their toy.

This helps them grasp the concept of empathy and understand how their actions affect others.

For older kids, you can have more in-depth conversations about emotions, like remorse, and the importance of taking responsibility for their actions. 

Encourage them to think about why they’re apologizing and what they can do to make things better. 

Asking them how they would feel in the other person’s shoes works here too.

This helps them build a deeper understanding of the importance of being genuine when they say sorry.

Another thing to consider is giving your child time to process their feelings and the other person’s feelings before they say sorry.

Naturally you want your kids to apologize immediately after they’ve hurt someone or made a mistake, but giving them time to work through their thoughts and feelings will ensure their apology is sincere. 

Using Teachable Moments

When your child engages in hurtful behavior or becomes angry, use these teachable moments to demonstrate genuine apologies. 

Show them how you express remorse and take responsibility for any negative actions. 

Explain the consequences of their behavior, emphasizing the importance of listening to the other person. Learning to listen to others will help them build understanding and empathy. 

Consider using scenarios to help your child practice apologizing. For example, role-playing situations where they might need to say sorry, and discussing the emotions involved.

This is something we do all the time. I’ll ask my kids how they would feel if someone did something hurtful to them, (excluded them, took something of theirs, physically hurt them, etc.) and then we talk about how they would want those situations solved. Then we tie that to how they can respond if they do something hurtful to someone else.

This practice can help them build the skills necessary for meaningful apologies in real-life situations.

Here are a few tips to help teach your child to genuinely apologize:

• Be an example: Exhibit the behavior you want them to learn by apologizing sincerely when you make a mistake or hurt someone’s feelings.
• Discuss emotions: Help them understand both their own emotions and the emotions of others, which fosters more empathy.
• Highlight the importance of amends: Encourage your child to make amends, such as offering to help or fix the situation, reinforcing the value of taking responsibility.
• Focus on sincerity: Remind your child that apologies should be genuine, not just to get out of trouble or because they’re told to do so.

Effective Apologies and Conflict Resolution

The Components of a Meaningful Apology

When teaching children how to apologize, it’s essential to help them understand what makes a meaningful apology. 

A genuine apology goes beyond  saying “I’m sorry.” 

Help your child to acknowledge the hurt they caused, express remorse, and understand the consequences of their actions. 

Encourage them to think about how their decisions impact others and their relationships, (for example, “your decision to lie means your teacher/friend/sibling is going to have a harder time trusting what you say in the future.”).

A great way to teach children to give heartfelt apologies is by using I-statements when they’re involved in conflicts. 

These statements show your kids how to take accountability for their actions and feelings without placing blame on others. 

An example of an I-statement might be, “I’m sorry I called you dumb. I know I hurt your feelings. I’ll try harder to express my thoughts differently next time.”

Instilling the Value of Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Forgiving and reconciling with others after conflicts or mistakes is a crucial life skill that can positively influence your child’s relationships. 

Experts suggest focusing on the process rather than the outcome when teaching your kids about forgiveness. 

When your child has made a mistake, they may have an outburst of emotion. By allowing your child to work through their big feelings and emotions, you’re showing them the power of forgiveness and that having big emotions is normal and they can be worked through. 

This sets a strong foundation for healthy future relationships!

When your child makes a mistake or causes harm, view it as a teachable moment to discuss the importance of saying sorry and seeking forgiveness from others. 

As I talked about earlier, you can also model healthy conflict resolution by apologizing to your child when you make a mistake.

In some cases, when a spoken apology doesn’t seem sufficient, it might be helpful for your child to write a letter or give a hug, (never force your kid to hug someone, but you can explain that a hug can show that you want the other person to feel better and leave that choice up to your child). 

Help your child to recognize and learn from their mistakes, without shame or fear, and you’ll be setting them up for a lifetime of strong, healthy relationships.

Adapting Apologies

Apologizing to Peers and Siblings

When teaching kids to apologize, it’s important to help them understand how to say sorry in various social situations. 

For apologizing to peers and siblings, encourage them to think about the hurt feelings they may have caused, and discuss how they can make repairs.

To guide your child in developing a sincere apology, consider these steps:

1. Empathy: Help your child take the other person’s perspective into account.
2. Acknowledgment: Teach your child to acknowledge the wrong-doing and the impact it had on the other person.
3. Offering Solutions: Encourage your child to come up with ways to make amends for their actions.
4. Commitment to Change: Emphasize the importance of learning from mistakes and making positive changes in the future.

These steps help your child understand the concept of conflict resolution and become better equipped to handle various social situations.

Addressing Larger Mistakes and Consequences

In situations where the mistake has larger consequences or has affected multiple people, the process of apologizing might involve more time and effort. 

For example if their behavior in school led to their classmates missing part of recess, or they cheated on a test and their teacher caught them, or if they took something that didn’t belong to them, etc. 

These kinds of situations may need more than one kind of apology, (like verbal and written, or volunteer work and a verbal conversation).

The steps for teaching kids to apologize in these situations are pretty much the same:

1. Taking Responsibility: Make sure your child understands the full extent of the consequences of their actions and accepts responsibility.
2. Communication: Help your child communicate their apology effectively, whether it’s through a verbal conversation, letter, community work, or multiple methods.
3. Repairing: Encourage your child to work on fixing the problems they’ve caused and making amends to people who were affected.
4. Implementing Changes: Reinforce the importance of positive changes to prevent a similar situation from happening in the future. 

By understanding how to adapt apologies based on different social situations your kids will have a better understanding for how and when to apologize. 

Final thoughts

Getting your kid to say they’re sorry, and mean it, is a process that takes time. You want to start when your child is young by modeling how to apologize and help them understand their emotions and the other person’s emotions. 

Learning how to apologize teaches them empathy and the importance of taking responsibility. With patience, love, and support, your child will learn valuable life skills and feel more connected to others through their ability to offer heartfelt apologies and make amends.

I don’t know what it is about the task that my kids seem to do everything they can to avoid doing that. Or they ask if I can do it, or if dad can clean it, or if their siblings can help, (not opposed to that last one if they’re willing to help the other ones in return, but that’s rarely the case).

No matter how many times I try to explain that they’re responsible for their rooms and I didn’t create the mess so I’m not going to clean it, it’s just pulling teeth to get them to do it.

And we do this every weekend! I’m like I don’t get it, you know the deal, this is not new to you, why are you fighting this?!

I’ve tried a lot of different strategies, and while we’re still in the thick of this stage, (although does the stage ever end??) there are some things that have helped!

The Importance of Teaching Kids to Clean Their Rooms

Teaching your kids to clean their rooms is important because it helps instill a sense of responsibility and gives your kids the chance to learn valuable life skills. 

When kids have a regular routine for maintaining their rooms, they develop time management and organization skills. 

This is one of the first chores kids have and being consistent in cleaning their room lays the foundation for other responsibilities they’ll encounter in the future.

Organization and Reducing Stress

A clean and organized room can significantly reduce stress for both you and your child. 

According to Psych Central, a clean space can improve mood, give a sense of control, and reduce stress and anxiety. 

I know this is true for me because every time I walk into a cluttered, messy room my mood shifts and I’m instantly irritable because I can barely walk through the room and I don’t know where anything is. Sometimes I end up yelling at my kids because I get frustrated with how messy the room is!

But when I walk into a room that’s clean, those negative feelings aren’t there and I actually want to spend time in that room.

It’s the same for kids, they’re much more likely to spend time in their room if it’s clean and orderly versus messy and chaotic.

By establishing a routine for cleaning their rooms, you’re fostering their ability to organize, prioritize, and problem-solve.

When working with your child on their room, consider these tips:

• Make a plan: Begin with a plan that outlines specific tasks and goals. This helps guide your child so they know what steps need to be done, and it makes the process easier to follow.
• Use visual aids: You can use color-coded bins, labels, or designated baskets to assist in organizing their belongings. This can make it more enjoyable and make the process simpler for your child.
• Encourage regular maintenance: Schedule regular cleaning times to prevent the room from becoming unmanageable. This can be a weekly or even daily routine, depending on your child’s activities and needs.

By teaching your child the importance of maintaining a clean and organized room, you’re not only imparting essential life skills but also promoting a healthier, less stressful environment for them to thrive in.

Creating a Cleaning Routine for Kids

Teaching your kids to clean their room can be a challenging task as we know, but establishing a cleaning routine can make the process go more smoothly. 

In this section, we’ll discuss how to create an effective cleaning routine, including establishing a schedule, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and using visual reminders and chore charts.

Establishing a Schedule

Creating a consistent cleaning schedule is crucial for helping your kids internalize their room cleaning routine. 

Pick a specific day and time for cleaning, such as every Saturday morning or every other evening. 

I’ve noticed that since we’ve chosen the weekends to clean rooms it’s helped to bring the whining down because they already know it’s coming.

Make sure to communicate these expectations clearly and stick to the schedule as consistently as possible. This helps your kids form a habit and normalize cleaning as part of their daily or weekly routines.

Breaking Down Tasks into Smaller Steps

Cleaning a room can feel overwhelming, especially for younger kids. 

They often feel like they don’t know where to begin, which stresses them out and can then start to bring on bigger emotions.

To make it more manageable, break down the tasks into smaller steps. For example, instead of giving your child generic directions to clean their entire room, provide them with specific tasks like:

1. Picking up toys and putting them away
2. Placing dirty clothes in the hamper
3. Putting clean clothes in the drawers or hang them up
4. Picking up books and putting them away
5. Vacuuming or sweeping the floor

By breaking the chore into smaller, more manageable tasks, your child will feel less overwhelmed and they’ll be more likely to complete their cleaning routine.

Visual Reminders and Chore Charts

Visual reminders and chore charts can be great tools for keeping your kids on track with their cleaning routine. 

Visual charts/reminders are especially good for little kids who can’t read yet.

Create a chart with each specific task your child is responsible for completing. Use images or simple descriptions to help them understand their duties.

You can also incorporate fun elements like stickers or rewards for completing tasks.

For my kids, if they complete a chore chart, I’ve given rewards like they can go to the dollar store and pick a couple things out, or they can order a book. I’ve also used screen time as an incentive which has definitely helped! 

Stickers or rewards make the cleaning routine more engaging for your child and it may even become a fun activity they look forward to.

Some examples of visual reminders include:

• A magnetic chore chart on the fridge, with magnets featuring each task
• A whiteboard with a list of tasks, allowing your child to erase each one as they complete it
• A simple printed chore chart pinned to your child’s bedroom wall or door

Creating a cleaning routine for your kids involves establishing a schedule, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and using visual reminders and chore charts. 

This approach helps make cleaning a more enjoyable and less overwhelming experience for both you and your kids.

Incorporating Fun and Motivation into Cleaning

Speaking of an enjoyable experience, cleaning doesn’t have to be a boring chore for your kids. 

You can try to incorporate fun and motivation into the process by making it fun and rewarding for them. 

Let’s look at some simple strategies to encourage your kids to clean their room.

Using Music

One way to make cleaning more enjoyable is by playing some music while your kids straighten up their rooms. 

You can create a playlist of some upbeat music, (or if they’re old enough let them pick the songs) to get them in the mood and make cleaning feel like a fun dance party.

Music can turn a tedious task into an engaging activity that your kids will look forward to.

I know this is true because I’ve used this method myself many times and I’ve done it with my kids. It keeps everyone in positive spirits and they’re not focusing on the act of cleaning but more on the music they’re listening to.

Positive Reinforcement

Giving praise and rewards for a job well done can go a long way in encouraging your kids to clean their room. 

When they complete a task or make progress in cleaning, offer praise and acknowledge their effort. 

For example, you can try:

• Complimenting their creativity in organizing their toys/games/books
• Appreciating their hard work in dusting and vacuuming
• Praising them for putting their clothes away neatly

So often kids are reminded they didn’t do something right or to fix something, (ex: a chore they did needs to be re-done, homework needs to be fixed, etc.). By focusing on what they’re doing well at helps your kids feel good about their accomplishments and encourages them to continue their cleaning efforts.

Incentives and Allowance

In addition to praise, giving them incentives and offering allowance can help motivate your kids to maintain a clean room. 

Consider creating a system where your kids earn an allowance or privileges based on their cleaning progress. 

Some ideas could be:

• Earning points for each task completed, with points redeemable for fun activities or small rewards
• Receiving a bonus on their allowance for maintaining a clean room throughout the week
• Gaining extra privileges, such as more screen time, for completing cleaning tasks promptly

By implementing these strategies, cleaning their room becomes a more enjoyable and rewarding experience for your kids. Keeping the process positive helps your kids develop lasting habits.

Tips for Cleaning Specific Areas of a Child’s Room

Organizing Clothes and Laundry

With one of my kids, no matter how many times I tell them to put their dirty clothes in their hamper, and fold/hang their clean clothes, they never do! Their clothes end up everywhere but the correct place!

If clothes are a struggle for your kid, have them gather all the dirty clothes in the room and put them in a hamper. 

Next, have them sort clean clothes into categories such as shirts, pants, pajamas, etc. Fold and organize these items in drawers or hang them up in a closet.

Encourage your child to put away their laundry and maintain organization by having designated spots for different types of clothing, (for example, a pajama drawer, school clothes are hung up in the closet, a pants drawer, an undergarment/sock drawer, etc.).

Dealing with Toys, Books, Games, and More

When it comes to the things in your kids room like toys, games, books, and other stuff, you can start by separating them and put them into categories based on their use, like school supplies, books, games, dolls, stuffed animals, etc. 

Create designated storage areas for each category, such as shelves, bins, or boxes, to maintain an organized space. 

Teach your child the importance of putting items back into their designated spot after use, and consider implementing a clean room picture trick to help them visualize a properly organized space.

Cleaning Surfaces and Windows

Cleaning all the surfaces and windows in your child’s room are what I would consider a deep clean. For my kids I don’t require them to do a deep clean very often, but you can decide how often you want your kids to do this part.

To tackle the surfaces in your child’s room, wipe down all furniture, shelves, and window sills. 

You can clean those surfaces with a damp cloth and mild cleaning solution as needed, paying special attention to areas that are frequently used, like desks and nightstands. 

Next, show them how to clean the windows with a glass cleaner and paper towels.

By focusing on this aspect of cleaning you’re showing your child how to maintain a healthy environment.

Addressing Resistance and Power Struggles

Setting Clear Expectations and Consequences

Now we get to the part that’s the most frustrating. The resistance and power struggles that come when you tell them to clean their room.

When you’re dealing with power struggles surrounding messy rooms, you have to ensure you establish clear expectations and consequences with your child. 

Clearly explain to them the importance of keeping their room clean and how it will help them feel more comfortable and relaxed. 

Be specific about the tasks you expect them to complete, such as making their bed, putting away toys, or hanging up clothes.

Establish a routine for when cleaning should happen, whether it’s once a week, daily, or another arrangement that best suits your family’s needs. Flexibility is key, but consistency will help make cleanup more manageable over time.

Discuss the consequences if they don’t adhere to these expectations. 

For example, if your kid doesn’t clean their room, they’ll lose privileges like screen time, talking on the phone with friends, or playing outside with friends. 

The most important part of reducing power struggles is following through with the consequences you’ve established. This helps your child understand that having a clean room is important, and also lets them see what happens if they don’t follow the rules. This makes it more likely they’ll follow through in the future.

Final thoughts

So while you may currently be in the messy room stage, there are things you can do to help get your kids to clean their rooms.

Although it’s not perfect, these strategies have really helped my kids clean their room, they’ve reduced power struggles, and they keep them motivated to maintain that clean space. 

These tips will also help your kids develop responsibility, problem-solving, and other important life skills that will benefit them far beyond their rooms!

With my first baby, I mostly focused on biracial hair, but I quickly discovered there was a lot more to learn.

Now that I’m four kids deep, I’ve discovered there’s a lot of complexities that I don’t inherently know, but that I have to research and talk with my husband about to give my kids the best possible upbringing.

If you’re raising biracial kids, these important points will help you cultivate kids with high self-esteem and a healthy racial and cultural identity!

Understanding Biracial Identity

Racial Identity Development

Developing racial identity is crucial for biracial children!

You need to instill a healthy sense of self-awareness and self-identity in your child. You can do this by allowing them to explore both sides of their racial heritage. 

Surrounding your child with family and/or friends who share the other race is very important in helping your child explore and understand their other racial heritage.

If that’s not possible right now, putting your child in a diverse school or daycare, surrounding them with diverse books, diverse toys, and watching shows with diverse characters is a good start.

It’s important for you to have a support system of people who share your child’s other race, because your child will likely experience some form of microaggressions and racism and they’ll need you and their support system to help them and process those events.

In the beginning I was completely unaware of some of the microaggressions aimed at my kids and it took me talking with my friends or coming across it in the research I was doing to discover what was actually happening.

Once I knew what was happening I was better able to respond, and help my children come up with responses to microaggressions they would likely encounter in the future.

When you or your child experiences microaggressions and/or racism it can easily cause you to want to blow up from the anger you’re experiencing.

Trust me, I definitely have had those feelings, but I caution you against acting on that anger as seeing that response may cause your kids to not want to tell you about experiences they have in the future for fear that it will make you upset.

You want to make sure your kids have a safe and nurturing environment so they can express their thoughts and feelings openly. 

You can also have conversations around race, culture, and ethnicity in your home which can help them value that being biracial makes them unique.

Cultural Identity

If you haven’t already, you’ll want to educate yourself on your child’s other cultural background as this is an important part of fostering a positive self identity and feelings of belonging for them. 

Some ways to help your child develop a strong cultural identity are:

• Introducing them to the arts, music, and traditional practices of both cultures
• Teaching them the language of their background(s)
• Celebrating holidays and traditions from both cultures
• Getting to know other multicultural families and engaging in community events that celebrate their cultural backgrounds

When your child is exposed to and understands their cultural backgrounds they’re more likely to embrace their unique heritages and they’re less likely to experience identity issues. 

Your child should be allowed to develop their cultural identity in a way that feels meaningful to them, (meaning they may identify more strongly with one of their cultures than the other, or they may identify with both).

Challenges and Triumphs

Unique Challenges

When you’re raising a biracial child, you’ll likely encounter unique challenges because of the differences in your race and identity. 

Like many biracial kids, my kids are going to experience life very differently than I did, and they may also have a different experience than my husband did. 

Because of this, certain life experiences can be confusing, difficult, or isolating for them. 

Some common challenges your kids may face are:

• Dealing with discrimination and microaggressions
• Navigating and developing their identity
• Dealing with biases within their own family or in the community

It’s essential for you to have an open and supportive relationship with your child so they feel comfortable exploring their identity and discussing their experiences with you.

Overcoming Discrimination

Discrimination can take various forms, from overt acts of racism to subtle microaggressions. 

As I mentioned above, it took me a while to realize that when people would ask me, “is that your daughter?”, it wasn’t because perhaps I looked young or that was a question every new mom was asked. 

(Eventually I figured this out when I asked all my other friends with single race children if they were ever asked this and they all said never).

Or when people would make assumptions about my daughter’s hair, (“her hair must take so long to do!” “I bet it’s so hard to do her hair”, “how do you take care of all that hair?!”, etc.) that again, this wasn’t a question my white friends with white kids were asked.

I give these examples because it’s important for you to know when discrimination is happening so you know how to respond and how to support your kids when it happens to them.

To support your child you can help them build their confidence which will prepare them for when these situations arise. 

Some steps you can take are:

1. Encouraging open communication: Make sure your child feels comfortable discussing their feelings and experiences with you. When they know they can come to you, they’ll be able to better understand and process any incidents of discrimination they face.
2. Teach them to advocate for themselves: Help your child develop the skills necessary to be assertive and stand up for themselves when they encounter biased behavior.
3. Educate them about their heritage: Encourage your child to learn about and appreciate both sides of their racial background. This knowledge can give them a strong sense of self, making it easier to cope with discrimination.
4. Connect with other multiracial families: Join support groups online, or engage with other biracial families in your community. This can provide your child with a safe space to discuss race relations, share experiences, and develop a strong sense of belonging.

Raising Confident Biracial Children

Creating a Supportive Environment

One of the most critical aspects of raising confident biracial children is creating a supportive environment at home. 

This starts with ensuring your kids feel loved and valued for who they are. 

Again, (I know I sound like a broken record here but it’s really important) be sure to encourage open discussions about race, diversity, and identity to build that strong foundation in your home.

Expose your children to various cultures, languages, and traditions to help them appreciate and celebrate differences in others. 

You can do this with diverse books, attending community events, watching movies or TV in other languages or with captions in other languages, and try exploring cultural traditions, (either your child’s or a completely different one) in your home.

It’s also important to teach them about the history of each of their cultural backgrounds. 

The more they educate themselves about their unique blend of cultures, the more confident they’ll feel in their own identity.

Encouraging Cultural Exploration

You can explore culture with your kids with these ideas:

• Language: Teach your child the languages of their cultural backgrounds. This can help them connect more deeply with their heritage and give them a sense of pride. For example, if their father is bilingual and speaks both Spanish and English, encourage them to learn Spanish at an early age. 
• Traditions: Incorporate family traditions from each culture into your daily life or on special occasions. This can be as simple as cooking traditional meals from both cultures or celebrating various holidays and festivals.

Navigating Different Family Contexts

Raising biracial children comes with its unique set of challenges and joys. Let’s look at some different family dynamics and how they can affect your journey.

White Mom, Biracial Child

As a white mom with a biracial child, you’ll likely feel overwhelmed at some point by the responsibility of helping your child navigate their mixed-race identity. 

You’re having to look at life with a very different lens than how you experienced things, and a lot of times that means dealing with discomfort, (acknowledging your privilege, becoming an active ally, advocating for your kids/family, addressing discrimination with your family, etc). 

Because of how life is for your kids, there will probably be a lot of instances where you ‘didn’t know what you didn’t know’, (ex: people touching your kids hair without permission, asking if you’re their mom, asking if they’re your biological kids, the dangers of police for people of color, etc.). 

While these instances will happen, once you know, you need to do the work. It’s essential to educate yourself on racial issues and the experiences of people of color, so you can better understand how to support and advocate for your child. 

Here are some other tips to help:

• Take an active role in learning about your child’s racial and cultural background. Don’t leave it only to the parent of color to do this part of the parenting, and don’t wait until your kids come to you to ask questions about race/culture. Start when they’re young!
• Encourage discussions about race, skin color, and cultural differences. Don’t wait to have these conversations until they’re in school because you don’t want them to feel different. You’re not making them feel different, you’re allowing them to be seen!
• Expose your child to diverse role models who share their racial background whenever possible.
• Provide them with books, movies, and other resources that feature biracial characters.

Single Parent Families

For single parents raising biracial children, it’s crucial to foster an environment where your child feels supported and connected to both sides of their cultural heritage. This can no doubt be difficult especially if your child’s other parent isn’t in the picture.

Here are some strategies:

• Form relationships with your child’s extended family, so they can know and learn from their diverse family members.
• Incorporate traditions, holidays, and practices from your child’s other cultural backgrounds.
• Reach out to other single parents or support groups who understand the unique challenges of raising biracial children on your own.
• Connect with people in your community who have the same background as your child.

Although it can be overwhelming, you can definitely raise confident and proud biracial children in single-parent families by creating a strong foundation and support system rooted in understanding their diverse needs.

Addressing Skin Color

Your child’s skin color may be different from you, their other parent, or even their siblings.

This can create self-esteem issues because they may get comments on their skin color or they may hear comments made about their skin color, (they may also hear these comments made about or to their siblings as well). 

Often this is seen when one sibling has darker skin and the other has lighter skin.

The comments made about skin color, either directly or within earshot of your child can have far reaching effects.

 Here are a few tips to combat this:

• Teach your child that differences in skin color are normal and beautiful.
• Encourage them to express their feelings and experiences about their skin color with you or others they trust.
• Address and challenge any negative comments or stereotypes they may be exposed to, and reaffirm your child’s value and uniqueness. (Daily positive affirmations are a great way to do this!)

Final thoughts

There’s a lot of learning that you have to do when you’re raising biracial children, especially if you’re a white parent. (Mostly because your kids will have a different journey through life than you did).

But this work is so necessary to help ensure your kids have a healthy sense of self and positive self-esteem!

You may not want to even think of traveling with your kids especially if they’re young.

You have to consider where you’re going, how you’ll get there, what to pack, what necessities your kids need with them, what stops you’ll make, and more!

I’ve traveled a few times with my kids both road trips and plane trips and both presented their own challenges.

But even with the challenges, the trips were well worth it because we had so much fun and made lasting memories as a family.

With careful planning and consideration you too can enjoy a (mostly) stress-free, fun trip with your family!

Here are some tips to make your trip smoother.

Tips for Traveling with Kids

Pre-Travel Preparation

Before your trip, thoroughly research your destination, where you want to stay, and local attractions to make informed decisions. 

Make a list of family-friendly activities and ask your kids for their input on what they’d like to do. This gets your kids excited about the trip!

Make sure you have space for your luggage, (if you’re traveling by car) or if you’re traveling by plane, that you know how much luggage you can have and what it costs.

Prepare any documents needed for each family member like passports, visas, and medical records. 

You can create a detailed itinerary so that you make the most out of your trip. But be sure to leave some unstructured time for relaxing and spontaneous adventures!

Packing Essentials

When it comes to packing for your family vacation, efficiency is key. 

I have a tendency to overpack, but with six people in our family, I had to learn to cut down what we brought with us, otherwise we’d never have room in the car and it would be too costly if we were flying.

Start with the essential clothes your family will need and make sure it’s weather appropriate for where you’re going.

Consider packing cubes to help stay organized and maximize space in your luggage.

When I pack for our trips, each bag has a purpose which makes it immensely easier to quickly grab what I need without having to grab and go through multiple bags. For example, one bag is our hygiene bag, one bag has the baby and toddler clothes, one bag has shoes, etc.

Some other items you may want to consider packing:

• First aid kit
• Snacks and water bottles, (perhaps a cooler if you’re driving)
• Diaper bag, (diapers, wipes, rags, extra outfits, changing pad, a plastic grocery bag that can be tied shut to put dirty diapers in)
• Hygiene products
• A portable potty seat if you’re traveling by car with a current potty training, or newly potty trained child
• Wet wipes and hand sanitizer
• Travel chargers
• Travel neck pillows

Don’t be afraid to get your kids involved in the packing process either, (if your kids are older). For example, have them choose their outfits and shoes.

Entertainment and Distractions

One of the more challenging parts of traveling with kids is keeping them entertained.

Even when I prep my kids on how long the drive or flight will be, (ex: it’s the same amount of time as when you’re in school, or we’re going to be driving until it’s dark outside, etc.) they still ask me not even an hour into the trip if we’re almost there or how much longer until we’re there.

These questions get aggravating quick!

So to keep those questions to a minimum, make sure you bring their favorite toys, books, and activity books to keep them occupied. 

If your child is younger, you can have special “travel bags” with surprise items that they only get once the trip has begun. This special bag can add more excitement and will keep your young one busy for longer since all the items are new!

You may also want to consider allowing your kids to use a tablet for watching movies or playing games. 

You can download movies or shows and load age-appropriate apps before leaving home. 

You can give them headphones to prevent the car from getting too noisy, or from disturbing other passengers on a plane.

If balancing screen time with other activities is important to you, you can always set screen time rules.

When we travel I tell my kids they have to read for a certain period of time before they can get out their tablets and they have to shut them off at a specific time.

Don’t forget too that when you’re traveling with kids in a car, you have to take breaks so they can get out of their cramped seats, stretch, and run around.

Even when I traveled with babies in tow, I made sure to get them out of their car seat for periods of time so they could get a break from being in the seat.

You can plan out longer breaks where you guys explore tourist stops, or when you stop for food and gas.

Feeding and Hydration

Carry-On Snacks and Drinks

To keep your kids from getting ‘hangry’ make sure you have a variety of non-perishable snacks and drinks on hand. If you’re flying, find out what size drinks you can bring on the plane.

If you’re breastfeeding, think about if you’ll need to bring a pump and whether you’re in a car or on a plane, think about how you’ll store your milk.

If you’re formula feeding, make sure you bring enough to last the entire trip and that you have enough bottles. Remember, you can pack pre-measured powder and add water when needed.

Managing Meals While Traveling

When it comes to mealtime when traveling with children, proper planning can save you time and stress. Here are a few tips to help manage meals on the go:

1. Research local restaurants and accommodations: Before you leave, search for family-friendly food places that cater to kids, including menus and high-chair availability. This way, you won’t be scrambling to find an appropriate place to eat.
2. Pack non-perishable meal items: In case you can’t find suitable restaurant options, or you’d rather make food at a hotel, you can bring along some easy meals for your kids. Some options could be boxed macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or even canned soups that can be heated up easily.
3. Bring a portable high-chair or booster seat: Not every restaurant you stop at will have a high-chair or booster seat, or they may not fit well, (those one size fits all wooden high chairs you see at a lot of diners are awful for babies!). With that in mind, it’s worth investing in a lightweight, collapsible booster seat that can be used while traveling. This ensures you’ll always have an adequate space for your little one to eat comfortably.
4. Stay flexible: As you probably know, even when you plan out every last detail, something unexpected usually happens. Make sure you have a couple of plans in case something falls through. 

These tips will help keep the hunger rage away, and keeps little ones comfortable while eating out which makes for a much more pleasant trip for all! 

Sleep and Comfort

Sleep Accessories

Ensuring your child sleeps well while traveling starts with bringing the right sleep accessories. 

Don’t forget their favorite comfort items, like a special blanket or stuffed animal. A travel neck pillow can help your kids sleep more comfortably when they have to sleep sitting up. Also, a portable sound machine can be a lifesaver as it drowns out noise and creates a familiar sleep environment.

You may want to bring a travel stroller, or a car seat stroller combo. It not only helps your little one sleep comfortably on-the-go but also makes transportation more manageable.

Jet Lag Tips

Jet lag is no fun for adults or kids, so here are some tips to help you and your child adjust to new time zones:

1. Stay hydrated: Drinking water regularly can help ease jet lag symptoms.
2. Adjust schedules: A few days before you leave you can slowly adjust bedtime and wake-up times closer to the time zone of your destination.
3. Expose to sunlight: Once you reach your destination, spend lots of time outdoors during the day. Sunlight helps regulate sleep patterns.
4. Stay active: Encourage physical activity during the day. It’ll help your child feel tired and sleep better at night.
5. Be patient: Understand that adjusting to new time zones may take a few days.

Keep in mind each kid is unique in how they will be affected by jet lag. Be prepared to make adjustments to figure out what works best for your family. 

Managing Security and Airport Processes

When traveling with kids, going through the airport and security can be rough!

When we went to the airport we made sure to get there early because everything will take longer with kids! So make sure you give yourself extra time before you board, (for bathroom breaks, eating a meal, changing and feeding a baby, etc.)

Here are some other tips to help you navigate through the airport.

Navigating Airport Security

When you get to airport security, make sure to have your identification and boarding passes ready. 

One way to do this is if you have multiple kids and more than one adult traveling, you can have each adult responsible for certain kids. So one parent will have the bags and boarding passes for one kid, and the other would have the bags and boarding passes for the other.

This way you can share the responsibility of the kids, which may make it easier for you both.

Another way you can go through the airport is one parent carries most/all carry-on luggage, and the other parent has all the boarding passes for the kids.

Whatever way you choose, be sure to communicate with each other so everyone knows what the plan is.

For children under 18, they usually don’t need an ID, but having some form of identification is never a bad idea. 

Remember that the TSA has special procedures for younger travelers. 

Ask them what the best way is to screen your child.

If you have a stroller or car seat, you’ll probably have to take your child out and carry them through the metal detector.

When I went through the airport with my baby, I wore her in a baby carrier. This was super helpful because I was able to have my hands free and also because they let us go through the metal detector without needing to take her out.

For your carry on bags, make sure you know the rules for what liquids you can bring and how much you can have. 

Some exceptions allow you to bring medically necessary liquids, such as baby formula, breast milk, or medications, so make sure you know what the exceptions are for the airline you’re using.

Remember to keep all your essential items – toys, snacks, diapers, and wipes – in your carry-on bag. This ensures that you have everything you need to keep your child comfortable during the trip.

Precautions and Contingencies

As I discussed earlier, things can pop up that you weren’t planning for so make sure you’ve got extra clothes, diapers, and snacks in case of travel delays.

If you need to bring cooling accessories, such as ice packs or freezer packs, make sure they’re frozen solid when you enter the screening process. If they’re partially melted, TSA may require additional screening.

Look for family restrooms at the airport if you can because they give you a private place to change diapers or clothes. They can help keep everyone at ease since you can stay together. Your kids won’t have to wait outside the stall in a crowded bathroom waiting for you to finish going to the bathroom.

It’s easy to feel anxious when you’re going through the airport with your kids, but plan as best you can, be flexible, and ask questions if you need help!

Traveling with Different Age Groups

Another thing to consider when you’re traveling with kids, is managing the needs of different age groups.  

Sometimes this can be a good thing, (like if you have older kids who can help with the younger ones) but it can also present challenges too, (like kids who don’t share the same interests which can make stopping at different destinations difficult).

To make your trip easier and more enjoyable, consider these tips for each age group.

Infants and Toddlers

At this age, your little ones need constant attention and care. Here are some tips to make their trip comfortable:

• Choose a compact and foldable stroller that can fit into overhead luggage compartments on airplanes, such as the Babyzen Yoyo, or wear them in a baby carrier.
• Keep essentials handy in a backpack so you won’t have to constantly go through your luggage.
• For car trips, make sure they’re sitting in the correct car seat and in the right direction, (facing backwards as long as the car seat allows) to keep them safe.

Middle Age Children (4-12)

Kids at this stage are excited for trips and love to explore. Engage them in the trip by:

• Involving them in the planning process, even in small ways, so they feel included and excited about the adventure (New York Times).
• Picking a destination with activities that cater to their interests, such as interactive museums, animal parks, or playgrounds.
• Giving them some responsibility, like carrying their own backpack or taking charge of a small task like keeping track of the cooler.

Teens

Traveling with teens can be tricky because they crave independence and can quickly get bored. To keep them interested, try:

• Choosing destinations that interest them, such as cities with a big art scene, music scene, or outdoor activities like rock climbing, hiking, or surfing.
• Encourage them to write in a travel journal or take pictures of the trip, so they feel inspired and involved throughout the trip.
• Consider giving them free time to explore on their own or with their siblings, (if you’re comfortable with that). For example, you can tell them they have to meet you at a specific location and a specific time. Or you could hang in the background while they’re exploring the destination. This way they still get to be independent, and you can ensure their safety.

Keep in mind the unique interests and needs of the specific age group of your kids to make the trip as memorable and enjoyable for everyone!

Theme Parks, Cruises, and Family Vacations

Planning the Perfect Theme Park Visit

Planning a visit to a theme park can be both exciting and overwhelming. 

If you’re not sure where to start, here are some tips:

• Research: Look for reviews and recommendations on the best theme parks for families. Make note of the age-appropriate attractions and entertainment options.
• Create a schedule: Map out your days, prioritizing the attractions and shows you guys definitely want to see. Include breaks in your day to avoid anyone getting exhausted, (especially if you have babies or toddlers).
• Pack smart: Bring essentials like sunscreen, water bottles, snacks, and comfortable clothes. A backpack is a great option because they can hold a lot, they’re relatively comfortable to wear, and they keep your hands free.

Cruise Lines and Kid-Friendly Activities

Cruises offer a variety of activities and entertainment for all ages. 

Keep these tips in mind to ensure a memorable family vacation:

• Choose the right cruise line: Look for cruise lines that are known for their family-friendly amenities and activities, such as dedicated kids and teens clubs, family cabins, and age-appropriate entertainment.
• Plan your shore excursions: Research where you’ll be stopping and arrange appropriate activities for your family, like guided tours or beach days. 
• Make reservations early: Popular onboard activities can fill up fast. Reserve your spot for dining, shows, and amenities in advance for the best experience.
• 

Staying Organized on the Go

When traveling with kids, staying organized can be a challenge. But these packing tips should help make your family trips as smooth as possible.

Packing Tips

1. 1. Use pouches or plastic bags: To keep your luggage organized, sort items into small pouches or plastic bags. This will prevent your belongings from becoming a jumbled mess during the drive or flight. Also, plastic bags can also be used for dirty clothes or diapers.
   2. Roll your clothes: Rolling outfits instead of folding them not only helps to create more space in your luggage but also helps things stay organized. Using a band to secure rolled outfits can keep them neatly in place.
   3. Pack a changing pad: When traveling with a toddler, accidents can happen. Have a portable changing pad readily available in your backpack for those on-the-go diaper changes. It’s also essential to have a baby wipes case easily accessible too for quick cleanups.

• Separate items by bag: As I mentioned earlier, packing bags with specific items makes it so much easier to identify what’s in each bag so you can keep the bags you need in reach, and grab only what you need, (like if you’re doing a quick overnight at a hotel and you don’t need all your bags). This may look like one bag is the hygiene bag, one bag is the diaper bag, one is the snack bag, each child gets a bag, etc.

Final thoughts

Traveling with kids can certainly feel overwhelming and perhaps you’ve avoided trips in the past because just the idea of it seemed too stressful.

I totally get it! But I’ve traveled with both babies and middle aged kids and the most important things you can do are research your travel options and destinations, plan, and stay organized!

Write a list for everything you’ll need to bring, plan out where you’ll stay, if you’re stopping along the way, figure out how you’ll navigate the airport if you’re flying, and stay as organized as possible.

These tips will help cut out the overwhelm and instead help you enjoy your trip and make amazing memories with your kids.

So when my kids started begging me to go to summer camp, I was really hesitant. 

I knew there were benefits of summer camp, but I didn’t want them to have the same experience that I had. Plus camp can be an investment and I wasn’t sure they truly wanted to go, or if it was one of those things that they said they wanted to do but would forget about it a few days later.

I waited it out, but after they continued to hound me about going, and finding an affordable camp that my best friends’ kids went to, I decided to let them go.

Camp has been a very different experience for them and I’m actually really happy that they’re going.

They’re learning so many great skills, meeting so many new people, and creating long-lasting memories!

With 4 kids, I’m stretched thin and can’t always do outdoor stuff as much as my kids would like. I love that camp gets my kids outside all day and off screens!

There’s lots of outdoor activities your kids can participate in at summer camp, like hiking, scavenger hunts, rock climbing, sports and more. 

These activities not only help them stay active, but also sharpen their problem-solving and teamwork skills.

Summer camp is an excellent opportunity for your child to engage in various sports and fitness activities. 

Sports can be very costly and require a lot of time and you don’t want to sign your kid up for a new sport if you’re not sure if they want to stick with it.

Camp can be a great place for your kids to try out new sports to see if they like it without investing a lot of extra money and time into it.

Some sports your kid can play at camp are soccer, basketball, baseball, football, or tennis.

These activities promote a healthy lifestyle and teach them the importance of sportsmanship and teamwork.

Swimming and Water Activities

Many summer camps offer swimming and water activities, such as diving, water polo, or canoeing. 

Swimming helps your kids stay physically active while also promoting water safety and confidence.

I personally feel like every child should know how to swim because you never know when that could save your life, so I view this as a necessary life skill for my kids.

However I have four kids, and swim lessons are expensive for just one day a week! Plus it’s impossible to find classes that are either at the same time, or back to back.

This means during the rest of the year we aren’t able to do swim lessons.

But during summer camp, the lessons are at the same time daily, (big kids in the afternoon, little kids in the morning) so I’m not stretched too thin, and since it’s a part of camp I’m not paying extra for the lessons!

It’s my favorite activity that’s offered in camp!

Arts and Crafts

For the kids who don’t love lots of physical activity, many summer camps also offer a variety of arts and crafts.

They can explore their creative side with things like pottery, painting, making jewelry, or woodworking. 

Participating in these activities allows them to express themselves while developing fine motor skills and artistic talents.

Nature Exploration

Another benefit of summer camp is that your child can explore nature. (This is my son’s favorite part of camp!) 

Some nature activities your child may experience during camp are bird watching, identifying plants, collecting materials found in nature for art projects, or bug watching/identification. 

These meaningful experiences foster your child’s connection to and appreciation for nature.

Personal Growth and Independence

Self-Esteem and Confidence

Summer camp provides an ideal environment for your child to explore new interests and face challenges that help boost their self-esteem and confidence.

I’ve found that when I’m not there reminding my kids every few minutes to not forget their towel for swim class, or remember to grab their water bottle, they take greater accountability for their things. They take it upon themselves to remember what they need as they move from activity to activity.

Your kid will work as a part of a team, and they’ll have to be accountable for their actions.

I was too focused on the all consuming demands of early motherhood, and any years beyond the immediate future just seemed so far away.

Plus, when anyone warned me, (unsolicited of course) of hard years to come, they either always talked about toddlers or teenagers.

So I was shocked when I noticed my oldest, (who is rapidly approaching the tween years) acting like a teen!

I was so confused because there are times when she’s still child-like, but can switch on a dime to eye rolls, a huge attitude, and easily irritable.

Despite the challenging attitude at times, my daughter and I have a very solid bond, and I really want to do everything I can to keep it strong. 

I know there’ll be bumps in the road as we navigate this transition, but I’ve been trying out these strategies and it’s made a huge difference in navigating the hard parts! 

If you too are looking to connect with your tween, the following tips will help keep your bond strong and help you bounce back after you’ve had an argument or a heated moment. 

Understanding the Tween Years

Adolescence and Tweens

The tween years are a transitional stage between childhood and adolescence, that typically ranges from ages 10 to 12. 

During these years, you’ll notice your child going through significant physical, emotional, and social changes. 

It’s essential to understand this transitional stage so you don’t take things so personally, and to better connect with your tween, and support their growth.

Physical and Emotional Changes

As your tween enters puberty, their body will undergo various physical changes due to hormonal fluctuations. 

You might notice growth spurts, body changes, and changes in body odor or acne. 

These physical changes can be really hard for your tween to deal with, especially if people are noticing and pointing it out.

It’s crucial to be patient and empathetic during this time, as these physical changes can impact your tween’s self-esteem and confidence.

Emotionally, your tween may experience mood swings or be very sensitive.

I was really surprised when my daughter began having huge mood swings and getting her feelings hurt by, (what I perceived as) things that didn’t warrant that big of an emotional reaction.

These big emotions are happening because of their developing brain and hormonal changes. 

It’s important to create a safe space for your tween to express their emotions and discuss their feelings openly.

If they’re tight lipped about what’s going on with them, you can also get your tween books about puberty, body changes, and emotional changes that they’ll experience.

Growing Independence

Your tween’s desire for independence will grow stronger during these years.

Once your shadow, your child will now begin to really separate themselves. They want to make their own decisions, but they still crave guidance and support from you. 

Give your tween opportunities to become independent by giving them age-appropriate responsibilities and let them problem-solve which allows them to make their own choices.

To connect with your growing tween, talk with them and empathize with what they’re going through and encourage opportunities for them to become independent. 

Communication Strategies

Effective Listening

One really important aspect of connecting with your tween is to practice effective listening. 

This means you’re actively paying attention to what they’re saying, (put your phone down, turn the TV off, get rid of any distractions) and don’t interrupt or judge.

That latter part is definitely something I need to change! My daughter pointed out that I constantly interrupt her, (because I’m either anticipating what she’s going to say or I want to jump in with my thoughts). This irritates my daughter to no end and she’ll always tell me to not interrupt her. So when I notice I’m doing that, or when she tells me, I make it a point to not say anything until she’s completely done talking.

If you have a tween who doesn’t like to talk a lot, make sure you’re asking open ended questions and giving them enough time to fully answer before saying anything.

This ensures that you’re showing them you understand their feelings and concerns.

Open and Honest Conversations

Building a strong connection with your tween requires open and honest conversations. 

Share your thoughts and experiences, and make it a point to discuss both the positive and the negative parts. 

By giving them some insight on things that happened in your life, you’re opening the door for them to share their life with you. 

Plus when talking about negative experiences you’ve had or mistakes you’ve made, they can get an idea of the consequences that happen before they do the same thing. 

Here are some ideas to initiate meaningful conversations:

• Discuss current events or topics that you’re both interested in.
• Share stories from your own tween and teen years.
• Talk about their hobbies and interests, and ask how you can get involved.

Supportive Feedback

Also, it’s vital to give your child supportive feedback. You can celebrate your tweens accomplishments and still express your concerns in a non-judgmental manner. 

When challenging situations arise, focus on what the problem is, and not on your child. 

If you start going in on what they did wrong or what they should’ve done, your kid will likely shut down, (I’ve definitely made this mistake).

Instead offer guidance and encouragement to let them know that you’re there to help them through any problems they may be facing.

To ensure your feedback is helpful, consider these tips:

• Acknowledge their efforts and progress, even if the result isn’t perfect.
• Encourage them to learn from their setbacks and not be discouraged. (Ask what solutions they have).
• Help them set realistic goals and offer support in achieving them.

Building a Strong Relationship

Spending Quality Time

One of the keys to building a strong relationship with your tween is spending quality time together. 

Set aside time throughout the week to engage in activities you both enjoy, like family dinners, playing games, reading books, or watching movies. 

These positive interactions help your child feel connected to you and can help improve their mood.

Because your child is mostly independent now, (and as we all know every day life is hectic) or maybe you’ve got other kids who need you too, you may forget that your tween still needs time with you.

I noticed that many times when my daughter is moody, she’s looking for a connection with me. Once I started making sure I was doing regular activities with her, her mood improved and her emotional outbursts decreased!

Expressing Love and Affection

Your tween needs to feel loved and supported during this transitional phase of their life. 

Again, because your kid is big now, they may not ask for affection. But just because they don’t ask doesn’t mean they don’t still need love and affection from you!

Make an effort to express your love and affection in a way that resonates with them. Maybe your child has moved past wanting hugs and kisses, but enjoys snuggling with you while watching a movie. Or they like to hold your hand, or cuddle while reading a book.

Whatever love and affection looks like for your child, make sure you’re doing that!

Other ways to show your tween you love them are:

• Praise: Boost their confidence by pointing out things they’ve done well or the effort they put into something.
• Listening: Put away any distractions and actively listen to what they’re telling you.
• Open communication: Encourage open and honest conversations by allowing them to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment or interruption.

Creating Family Traditions

Participating in family traditions is another way to bring your whole family closer together. These customs can help your family feel connected, provide a sense of stability, and create lasting memories.

Some ideas for traditions are:

• Celebrating milestones: Think birthday celebrations, graduations, and religious milestones.
• Holiday traditions: Think about the holidays your family celebrates and hone in on special traditions you can enjoy together year after year.
• Cultural customs: Share your family’s cultural heritage through food, music, stories, or other traditional practices.

You can always adapt your traditions as needed to help your child feel included as they get older and still nurture that strong bond. 

Navigating Challenges and Difficult Topics

Approaching Challenging Conversations

When navigating challenges with your tween, again it’s so important to be non-judgmental. 

No one wants to talk to someone who’s going to make you feel bad for expressing your thoughts and feelings.

Talk to them about topics that matter to them and listen carefully to their feelings and concerns. Keep in mind your child may prefer to talk through chat and text messages, so be flexible to communicating with them in their preferred way.

Some things to keep in mind while having these conversations:

• Stay curious about your tween’s perspective. Ask questions to learn more about their thoughts and opinions.
• Make sure you listen without interrupting or forcing your viewpoints.
• Encourage honest communication.

Dealing with Peer Pressure

At this age, your tweens peers are going to have a huge influence on them. This can impact who they choose to be friends with, what activities they participate in, how they do in school, and their behavior.

To help your tween manage peer pressure, teach them to:

• Recognize signs of peer pressure, (what can it look like, how it may make them feel).
• Understand how to weigh the pros and cons of a situation when making a decision.
• Know that it’s okay to say “no” and stand their ground. Help your child come up with responses they can use when they feel uncomfortable. Give your child a code word they can use if they need you to get them out of a situation. (For example, have you seen my yellow shirt-means can you come pick me up).

Addressing Risky Behaviors

Mental health, bullying, emotions, and other sensitive topics are important to talk about as your tween will likely encounter them at some point. 

Here are some tips to address these issues:

• Mental Health: Talk about what mental heath is and the importance of taking care of your mental health. Let them know it’s ok to ask for help, and talk about what resources are available (e.g., school counselors, therapists).
• Bullying: Talk about strategies they can use if confronted with bullying behaviors, and encourage them to seek out people who can help them.
• Emotions: Help your tween recognize, process, and express their emotions in healthy ways.

Even though it may be uncomfortable, it’s also essential to acknowledge and discuss topics like sex, drugs, alcohol, dating, eating disorders, and other risky behaviors.

You may feel like it’s too early to have these conversations but by having them now, your child is more likely to hear you out than if you wait til their a teen. Plus they’ll be better prepared to handle these situations when they do occur.

Supporting Their Growing Independence

Encouraging Autonomy

When your tween was younger, you were the person who decided what activities they participated in. 

Now that your child is older, you’ll need to give them space to discover their own sense of self, which means letting them decide what hobbies and activities they want to do.

You can help support them by finding them classes and resources. 

On occasion, try to participate in their hobbies and include them in hobbies you enjoy as well. This helps to maintain a strong connection between the two of you.

Keep in mind growing independence often involves your tween isolating themselves from their family. 

This is normal so don’t take it personal if your kid starts spending all their time in their room!

Setting Boundaries and Expectations

While fostering independence is a vital step in parenting, setting boundaries and expectations is equally important. Letting your child know what the rules are and establishing a sense of routine is critical to helping them understand what the limits are.

Some tips for setting rules are:

• Create a consistent daily structure, like specific times for homework, screen time, and family activities.
• Discuss the consequences if they break a rule.
• Encourage open conversations about the rules you set and be open to their feedback, as this shows respect for their opinions.

Guiding and Protecting Them

As your tween explores their independence, it’s essential to protect and guide them without being overly intrusive. 

Be attentive to their emotions, their physical health, how they’re doing in school, peer relationships, and trust your gut if you notice any signs that you think aren’t normal for your child.

• Support their decision-making by offering helpful suggestions, while still giving them room to make their own choices.
• Ensure their safety by giving your child clear expectations about online use and social media.
• Be proactive in addressing any signs of depression, substance use, or any other unhealthy behaviors. Don’t be afraid to get professional help if your efforts aren’t working or you’re not sure what to do.

Creating Opportunities for Connection

Engaging in Shared Activities

Finding common interests and hobbies is a great way to connect with your tween. Consider watching a movie or playing video games together. My daughter and I love movie nights together!

Not only are these fun activities for you guys, but it can also be a low pressure way to start conversations.  

You can also participate in sports or take walks or go on hikes together. My husband and daughter enjoy playing soccer together. This is a great way for them to bond while also creating healthy habits. 

Try to set aside a specific time each week to do your favorite family activities together so they don’t get lost in the demands of daily life. 

Finding Moments for One-on-One Time

However, sometimes life gets really busy and you just can’t fit in a longer shared activity. 

You can still make the most of the ordinary opportunities like car rides, cooking dinner, or those few minutes before bed to have meaningful conversations with your child. 

Encourage them to share their feelings and thoughts with you, while also sharing your own. Share what you guys loved about the day or what you wished had gone different.

Final thoughts

There’s a lot of changes during this period of your tweens life. There’s a push and pull between staying a child and growing into an independent teen that’s challenging for both of you! But by staying present in your their life, communicating, listening, and being supportive you’ll help boost your tween’s confidence, and hold onto that strong bond the two of you have!

I know that phrase plays on repeat in my house and after the fifth time of hearing it, I’m ready to rip my hair out, (cause how are you bored when you have all these toys, books, crafts, and outside stuff available?!) or I just want to shove any activity in front of them just so they’ll stop!

It’s so tempting to solve your kids’ problems for them so you can have peace and quiet, (because you’re probably working, cleaning, cooking, or doing any number of other things). 

But there’s actually a number of surprising benefits to letting your kids be bored!

The Importance of Boredom for Kids

Child Development and Boredom

When your kids experience boredom, they develop valuable life skills like emotional regulation, problem-solving abilities, and self-motivation. 

In the long run your kids may have better long-term concentration and flexible thinking. source

One way to encourage your kids to engage in other activities is by limiting screen time. 

This not only fosters their creativity but also helps them become more independent in finding ways to entertain themselves.

Setting screen time limits for your kids is essential to encourage boredom. By reducing the amount of time they spend on screens, you’re giving them the opportunity to explore other activities. 

You may want to set up rules for when your kids can get on their electronic devices like day or time limits.

For my kids most of the time they can’t get on their devices until after dinner, and there’s a time limit for how long they can be on them. On weekends or breaks from school, they have a certain amount of things they have to do first before they can get on their devices, (ex: hygiene, free play, chores, read, etc).

I’m definitely all about letting my kids use their devices or watch TV, especially when I need them all to be busy so I can get stuff done.

But it’s about balance; occasional screen time is fine, but too much can hinder their growth and creativity.

Unstructured Time and Free Play

Encourage unstructured time and free play to let your kids explore their interests and learn new skills. 

By providing them with open-ended activities and materials, they can use their imagination and creativity. Simple items like art supplies, costumes, and sports equipment can inspire your kids to make crafts and projects, role-play, or engage in physical activities. 

This type of unstructured time is essential to help them develop problem-solving, planning, and organization skills.

Summer Vacation Planning

If you’re going on a summer vacation, make sure to add in some downtime. 

While it can be tempting, don’t fill every moment of your trip with activities and outings. Instead, allow your kids to have unstructured moments where they can enjoy simple experiences like exploring nature, building sandcastles on a beach, or relaxing by the pool reading a book. 

These moments provide them with opportunities to learn from boredom and develop independent ways to entertain themselves.

These days my kids have different interests so they don’t often play together. But when they’re bored, they’re far more likely to come together to find something fun and exciting to do, which I love!

Boredom also encourages children to take responsibility for their own time-management and develop autonomy. 

When kids are bored, they’re more likely to initiate tasks and chores that need to be done, such as cleaning their room or finishing homework.

Also, by taking ownership of their interests and activities, they begin to develop a stronger sense of self.

Alternatives to Screen-Based Entertainment

Again, it’s all too easy to resort to letting your kids get on screens to keep them busy, (trust me I know!). 

But there are lots of alternative activities your kids can do that’ll boost their creativity, confidence, and critical thinking skills. 

Creative Activities and DIY Projects

Encourage your child to explore their artistic side through various creative activities. These can include drawing, painting, sculpting, making music, and crafting with recycled items.

Creating art not only enhances your child’s creativity but also develops their confidence in expressing themselves.

DIY projects can be another fun way to keep kids engaged, (my kids love these!). 

Some ideas for projects are; build birdhouses, construct toy airplanes, do STEM projects, educational activities, or create simple science experiments at home. 

These hands-on projects are not only fun, but also teach valuable problem-solving skills.

Reading and Podcasts

Reading is another fantastic alternative to screen time, as it nurtures imagination and enhances language skills. 

You can go to the library and get books that pique your kids interests. The library is a regular hangout for my family and having so many different books available has really helped my kids fall in love with reading!

These days graphic novels are my older kids go to. They can’t get enough of them!

To encourage reading, you can make time for family reading sessions, or challenge your child to read for a certain amount of time each day.

Podcasts are an excellent option for kids who prefer listening to stories or learning new things audibly. 

You can find age-appropriate podcasts on a variety of subjects, such as science, history, or storytelling. 

Listening to podcasts together can also foster meaningful discussions and connections.

Physical Activity

Physical activity plays a crucial role in your child’s overall well-being. 

You can encourage your child to play sports, play outdoor games, or go for walks and hikes as a family. 

Regular physical activity not only improves physical health but also boosts emotional and mental well-being. 

Plus, if your kid is playing team sports, this teaches essential skills like collaboration, sportsmanship, and communication.

My daughter was what you’d call a reluctant reader.

When she was beginning to learn to read, she had very little interest in trying to read on her own. It was like pulling teeth to try to get her to practice any reading at all!

This was incredibly frustrating for me because I love reading and reading has always been an important activity in our household.

I assumed that because I loved to read, (plus I read to them and in front of them) that my kids would love reading as much as I did.

When it started to become a battle, I knew I needed to do something different, because I didn’t want her reluctance and my persistence to translate into her hating to read.

Enter graphic novels!

I had heard how graphic novels could be a great tool for reluctant readers, so I decided to try them out.

Once I introduced my daughter to them, she became hooked pretty quickly and her love of reading took off!

What are the benefits of graphic novels?

Graphic novels are beneficial because they help build vocabulary, (just because there are a lot of pictures, doesn’t mean there aren’t meaningful words!). They’re also fast pace, meaning kids with shorter attention spans or kids who are reluctant to read will find the quick plot and action exciting!

These books develop and reinforce reading skills like inference, punctuation, and grammar rules.

Graphic novels are also a great tool to use because they’re available at all different reading levels and for many different interests! (source)

These books are great for any reader, but definitely try them out if you have a reluctant reader on your hands because it can be the tool that encourages their love of reading!

If you’re a white parent, learning how to care for biracial hair is something totally new to you.

One of the first things I researched when I found out I was pregnant with my first child, was biracial hair care.

I knew there could be a wide variety of how my baby’s hair turned out, but I also knew Black and biracial hair care was something I knew nothing about and I wanted to be as prepared as possible.

I’ve talked with many others who also said one of the first things they think about when they find out they are pregnant with a mixed race child, is hair care.

It’s easy to see why, because unless you have experience with natural hair, it’s something different on your child that see every day, and that you’ll have to learn how to care for pretty early on.

However, while hair care is an important piece, raising a mixed child is more than that.

This is something I didn’t realize until my child got a little older and I started to realize the weird or off-putting comments and questions I would get about my daughter were actually microaggressions.

While I wasn’t naïve about some of the issues my child could face, I also wasn’t prepared for the more insidious comments that came from not only strangers, but friends and family too.

The comments about her hair:

“You’re lucky, she’s going to have good hair.”

“Wow her hair must be so much work/so hard to do”

“Her hair must take you FOREVER!”

“Her dad must do her hair” (Insinuating I didn’t know how because I’m white).

The comments about her appearance:

“She’s gorgeous, mixed kids are the most beautiful kids”

“She’ll probably look like Rihanna/Mariah Carey” (or insert some other generalized idea of what a mixed girl should look like)

“Is she your daughter?” (Relates to appearance because she has darker skin than me).

And the list goes on.

If it hasn’t already happened, there will come a time when microaggressions, discrimination, and racism are thrown at your child and your family.

You’ll need to learn how to navigate those difficult situations that you’ve never had to think about before let alone deal with.

It’s coming to the uncomfortable realization that friends and family aren’t always allies and making decisions on if they can be educated, or if they need to cut out of your child’s life because those comments can be harmful to your child’s mental health.

You’ll need to come to terms with the fact that your child’s life is going to be different than yours.

This can be a difficult concept because when you see them, you just see your beautiful baby. But how society views them is often that they are less than because they are a person of color.

As a parent to your biracial child, it’s your responsibility to nurture their whole selves and not just what can be seen on the outside.

Supporting your child’s whole self will provide them with confidence, positive self-esteem, and the armor they need to unconditionally love who they are despite living in a racially divided world.

Again, hair care is an important piece to raising a biracial child who is confident in their unique identity, but it’s just that. 

A piece.

Uplifting your child is going to stretch you and it’ll likely be uncomfortable because you’ll need to unlearn a lot of the thoughts and behaviors you were taught growing up. Not just from your own family but from school, the media, and society.

It can cause rifts between you and your friends or family who aren’t willing to shift their views and behaviors.

However, that discomfort is going to help you transform into a more empathetic person and parent, and most importantly an ally for your child and other people of color. 

Becoming a parent is the most important job you’ll ever have because you’re shaping a whole human who will have an effect on this world.

Becoming a parent to a mixed race child is even more powerful because you’re transforming yourself along with elevating your child so they have a solid chance in a world that isn’t built for them to succeed.

Having biracial children made me more aware of the lack of diversity in many aspects of life. I’ve found you have to actively search for books, crafts, and toys that support racial and cultural diversity. Because my children are not White, I know it’s important for them to have toys that look like them, and crafts that give them an opportunity to draw themselves and their family without having to compromise on the color because it isn’t included in the pack. I know these diverse crafts and toys are necessary to support the way my children view themselves and the world. 

Your biracial kids need to see racial and cultural differences reflected in their everyday lives and you want to be sure your home accommodates that!

Again, it can be hard to find crafts and toys to expand the diversity in your home. Because of this, I’ve rounded up some great options for children’s crafts and toys that support different skin tones, races, and cultures.

Crafts and Toys That Support Racial and Cultural Diversity

Again my biggest complaint with crayons was that the standard pack didn’t support various skin tones. Not every person is as dark as a black crayon or as white as a white crayon. But these crayons are specifically designed for your child to be able to choose different shades from pale to dark so they can draw themselves and every member of their family with ease! There are also markers available that reflect different skin tones too!

This paint also supports your child making their masterpieces with colors that are more representative of themselves or their family.

This fun mix and match puzzle represents four major races and is a great way to introduce diversity to young children.

This toy family set can come separately, as they are 4 sets of families that are different ethnicities. But what I like about buying the whole set together, is your child can combine them to make the family that looks like theirs!

This adorable baby doll comes in four different races and it’s washable so it’s perfect for little ones!

This puzzle set lets your child match children and animals from different continents. It’s also fun because you can mix and match the kids and animals to get funny combinations!

Lego DUPLO has a set of people from around the world, which again lets your child explore people and cultures from around the world.

This family set comes in two different ethnicities!

This play dough comes in 6 colors to represent different skin tones so your child can make clay figures of themselves or people they know, and accurately represent each unique person.

This doll is perfect for school age kids, as the doll is also “ready for school”. This assortment of dolls is really nice because it has baby dolls for young kids and dolls for older children as well. They also come in three skin tones too!

This 32 piece wooden block set is magnetized so kids can create endless multiracial people! Your kids can create their unique family which builds positive self-esteem.

Yes there is a lack of diversity throughout many areas of life, but your home doesn’t have to be one of them! You can support your child’s racial and cultural differences with the crafts and toys you choose for them. Your children will benefit from seeing their reality reflected in the toys they play with and the crafts they make on a daily basis!
